In one of the more entertaining moments of the recent Papal visit to the United States, Representative Bob Brady absconded with the Pontiff’s partially used water glass following his speech before a joint-session of Congress.
According to various reports, Mr. Brady drank some of the water from the glass and then offered some to his staff. He then reportedly invited his mother and Senator Bob Casey to come dip their fingers in the water.
In responding to the bizarre incident, Rep Brady told the media, “Anything the pope touches becomes blessed, I think so and no one is going to change my mind.”
While the Bible says that the early church used handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched the Apostle Paul to carry healing to the sick (Acts 19:11-12), there is nothing in there about blessings being derived from holy backwash.
The Bible does state clearly in Deuteronomy 28, and other places, that blessings come from obeying God. It also says that curses come when we don’t obey God. With that in mind – and putting aside the fact that he “stole” the water glass – I thought it might be interesting to research Representative Brady’s voting record just a bit.
Concerning a bill fueled by the recent scandal involving Planned Parenthood’s selling of Baby parts, Representative Brady voted to continue funding Planned Parenthood with our tax dollars. He also voted against a bill that would have protected victims of failed abortions.
Another area of great modern day consternation is our relationship with Israel. Concerning Israel, God says, “I will bless those who bless you and those who curse you, I will curse.” (Genesis 12:3) Again, Representative Brady defied the will, and Word, of God, by voting to support a deal with Iran that will release billions of dollars in funding for the continuing proxy war Iran has against Israel.
Representative Brady, you are making things way too complicated. If you truly desire a blessing from God, you don’t need to try to steal one from another person who you think is blessed – that won’t work anyway – what you really need to do, is obey the Blessor.
Shalom
